Nina Dobrez wasn’t born into a Hollywood family. Nian subject started from humble beginnings. The Bulgarian native immigrated to Canada with her family as a child. Her natural love for performing sparked her love for the craft as a child and she has continuously worked hard to get to where she is today. Nina Dobrev marches to the beat of her own drum and the world around her dances to the beat, she is that person. Her contagious energy has made her the success she is today and we had the pleasure of chatting with her about The Vampire Diaries and her new show Fam.
Imagista: Where are you from originally?
Nina Dobrev: I was born in Bulgaria; my parents immigrated with us to Toronto when we were little so I lived there until I moved to the US for acting.
Imagista: How did you get into acting?
Nina Dobrev: I am not the typical actor type in the sense that my journey didn’t begin with me always dreaming of being an actor. As a kid, especially being the child of immigrants, we didn’t have very much and it was a daily struggle to make ends meet. When I told my parents I wanted to be an actor, they supported it but I don’t think they fully believed it was something that could really turn into a career. From a very young age I loved performing, in whatever form that was. My parents and brother would probably describe me as an annoying kid but they saw I loved putting on shows. My parents began signing me up for community theater classes and summer camps to keep me busy and that is where it all kind of began for me.
It wasn’t until I went to a performing arts high school in Toronto that I began truly developing all these tools to use while performing. Following that, I got an agent and it all kind of took off from there.
De laatste en nieuwste events van de cast gezamelijk staan in de galerij, zoals enkele conventies en Nina’s 30e verjaardag!

Nina Dobrev is not what you think.
Yes, you may recognize her from Degrassi (or alongside fellow cast member Drake in his “I’m Upset” video), The Vampire Diaries, or The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She’s highly recognizable—maybe you too are one of her 17.6 million Instagram followers. Lately she’s showing off a different side of herself: one that’s deeply invested in #TimesUp, has a dry sense of humor, has scene-stealing roles in independent films, and has Broadway dreams. We caught up with the 30-year-old actress while she was recovering from a cold in L.A. and talked about her fears, her superpowers, and her new sitcom, Fam.
Do you miss filming in Atlanta?
When I was on the The Vampire Diaries I was in Atlanta for like 6 years. I still have a house there—I put a lot of time and energy and money into decorating it. The city is so cool and booming and growing in a way. Almost all of the Marvel movies shoot in Atlanta. You’ll be out, and run into Captain America or Tony Stark.
I’ve heard there are a lot of movies being shot in Hungary.
In Bulgaria, where I’m from, there’s a big movie studio. But I’ve never shot back home, which is sad for my family. My family is like, “why don’t you shoot here?” My grandparents and cousin and dad all live there.
I had a friend who lived in Hungary who said it had the best yogurt in the world.
That’s news to me, I’m not a big dairy fan in general, I’m dairy-free. I eat meat, though.
“My character is a strong woman who has an experience in the workplace and grapples with how to deal with it.”
Would you do a Marvel movie?
I’ve auditioned for quite a few of them. I still have to fight for roles.
