The Banana Splits Movie (10PM-11:30PM, Horton Grand Theatre). One banana, two bananas, three bananas . . . gore! Be among the first to witness the terrifying return of everyone’s favorite silly quartet as The Banana Splits Movie offers a new take on the classic characters, which were first introduced to audiences in 1968 with The Banana Splits Adventure Hour variety program. In the upcoming horror thriller, a boy named Harley and his family go to a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley. But things take an unexpected turn—and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom, and their new pals safely escape? The film stars Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) and Dani Kind (Wynonna Earp), and Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons, Woody Woodpecker, UniKitty!) supplies the voices of the Banana Splits. The movie is written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (Raven’s Home, My Super Psycho Sweet 16) and directed by Danishka Esterhazy (Level 16).
Sara is aankomende zomer te zien in de nieuwe horror-film ‘The Banana Splits’ op dezender Syfy. De film is gebaseerd op een gelijknamige kinderserie die rond 1960 uitgezonden werd op NBC, echter nu met een horror twist.
The Banana Splits are back, but not everyone is here for it. A Syfy revival of the 1960s children’s TV show about a kid-friendly animal band is a full-on horror film which is getting a mixed reaction from fans of the original Saturday morning series.
According to TV Line, the beloved children’s show, which originally aired on NBC from 1968 to 1970, is back “with a vengeance, a horrible, bloody vengeance,” in Syfy’s The Banana Splits Movie. The unlikely revival film is directed by Danishka Esterhazy (Black Field) and written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (My Super Psycho Sweet 16) and has been rated R for “violence and gore.”
The film stars Finlay Wojtak-Hissong as Harley, a young boy who attends a taping of the classic TV show The Banana Splits with his family for his birthday. Dani Kind, Steve Lund, Romeo Carere, and The Vampire Diaries’ Sara Canning also star in the Syfy movie. Unfortunately, the Banana Splits bandmates Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky are doing more than singing the “Tra La La Song” during this particular TV taping as things take an unexpected (read: deadly) turn for young Harley and his family.
Based on the trailer, which you can see below, there will be singing and dancing in The Banana Splits Movie, as well as bloody violence as the TV bandmates are revealed to be murderous robots.
It’s no surprise that original fans of The Banana Splits are not happy about the slasher-style reboot of the classic kiddie show. Social media reaction has fans asking, “What have they done to The Banana Splits?”
“How dare they sully the wholesome memory of the stupidity that was the PROPER Banana Splits,” another classic TV fan tweeted. “I want nothing to do with it.”
“Why have they taken my childhood loved friends The Banana Splits and done this to them!??? WHY????” another wrote.
Others compared The Banana Splits movie to a rip-off of the video game franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Of course, the reboot movie is not the first bizarre Banana Splits sighting. In 2017, The Banana Splits had a crossover with the Suicide Squad in the comic book Suicide Squad/Banana Splits #1.
Back in the late 1960s, The Banana Splits Adventure Hour was a live action-animated collaboration between cartoon kings William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and children’s TV legends Sid and Marty Krofft. The four members of the fictional rock band were introduced as Fleegle the beagle (guitar), Bingo the gorilla (drums), Drooper the lion (bass), and Snorky the elephant (keyboards).
While the original Banana Splits only aired on NBC Saturday mornings for two years, it lived on in syndication on Cartoon Network and Boomerang.
The Banana Splits reboot movie will air on Syfy and will be available on Blu-ray later this summer.
WFF Announces Finalists for 2019 Screenwriters Lab
June 4, 2019
The Whistler Film Festival (WFF) has selected six Canadian screenwriters to participate in the six-month, multi-phased 2019 Screenwriters Lab. Chosen from a pool of over 40 applicants, the finalists will participate in a competitive program focusing on advancing feature-length projects from the script stage into production by facilitating mentorship and feedback from industry experts across the business spectrum. Phase I runs from June 23 to 28, followed by four months of mentorship, while Phase II runs from December 4 to 8 during the Whistler Film Festival + Summit.
WFF’s Screenwriters Lab is a feature script development program that brings together independent screenwriters from across the country to work intensively with key film industry personnel. The participants will work in private, group and market-oriented sessions to develop both creative skills and business opportunities for their projects. Designed to analyze the writer’s intentions, the program challenges participants to rethink script-to-screen strategies and chart a course for eventual production.
The six screenwriters and projects selected for the 2019 WFF Screenwriters Lab include:
Adam Hussein (BC) with NOWHERE’S HOME
Heather Schmidt (AB) with DISSONANCE
Jules Koostachin (BC) with BROKEN ANGEL
Julia Lederer (ON) with WITH LOVE AND A MAJOR ORGAN
Sara Canning (BC) with A SEARCH FOR SHE
Sheona McDonald (BC) with BACK BY MIDNIGHT

In a society that is currently fighting the good fight of equality, we are surrounded by teachings of feminism and going deeper into what it means to be a woman. In times like these we often find ourselves seeking out feminine role models who we can look to for inspiration. Sara Canning is the ideal role model. Intelligent, creative, determined and hardworking, it is easy to admire this duel actress-writer extraordinaire and I am forever grateful for the hour I was afforded to pick her brain.
You may recognize Sara from a number of television shows, from The Vampire Diaries to A Series of Unfortunate Events and from many movies inbetween. With a career that started in 2008, Sara has spent the last ten years forging a noteworthy path in the acting industry.
In our interview Sara shared with me how she went from acting to writing, quite literally flipping the script. As we dove into stories about her life, her career and her values, she shared exceptional advice for actors and writers alike.
INTRODUCING SARA CANNING
You wouldn’t know it by her lack of an Atlantic-Canadian accent, but the actress/writer was born and raised in Newfoundland until her family moved to Alberta when she was eleven. “I actually have an accent when I talk to my parents! I was recently in Newfoundland and [the accent] definitely exists,” she tells me, laughing. “It kind of comes and goes depending on whether I’m talking to someone from the East or West coast….or if I’ve had a couple of drinks.”
As a child, there were no friends or family in Sara’s life to guide her into the industry. She found herself there by way of her school theatre group and promptly fell in love. The experience gave her a new understanding of community and freed her in a way she never expected. “I was incredibly shy, so the fact that I auditioned at all amazes me. In the first play I did I was the only seventh grade student among all of the older kids who participated in it. They sort of took me under their wing and I just felt this real permission in it. It was amazing and so liberating. It was the beginning of what my life is now.”
Her time in theatre left a lasting mark. When Sara turned nineteen she made the decision to leave her home in Alberta and make the move to Vancouver where she would attend film school. “I made the move into film and television when I was nineteen while I was enrolled in a film program. Since then that’s the brunt of what I’ve been doing in the industry.”
