oktober 23, 2010   Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Malese over “Social Network” en andere projecten   Interviews, Melise Jow

Malese Jow has come a long way since the days of singing the national anthem at Tulsa Speedway and Oilers hockey games. The little girl with the big voice at those late 1990s events is all grown up at 19, with a 10-year acting career in Hollywood.

Her resume is impressive. The little girl gets a start with “Barney & Friends” and similar fare before finding tween TV fame on Nickelodeon’s “Unfabulous,” co-starring opposite Emma Roberts (Julia’s niece) for three years between 2004 and 2007 as Geena Fabiano, a fashion-obsessed diva.

Then, Jow broadened into teen roles with CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” playing Anna, a beautiful creature of the night who died in last season’s finale, and for whom fans are still clamoring to see come back to life.

Now, this Tulsa talent is moving into motion pictures. The part is small, but the movie is big: “The Social Network,” which opens Friday and tells the story of the college dorm-room founding of Facebook. Directed by David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) and written by Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”), the dark, comic drama has the pedigree of a player at this year’s Academy Awards.

“It’s your dream when you’re an aspiring actor,” Jow said in a phone interview, reached at her Los Angeles-area home. “What you want is to be a part of these kinds of films that are timeless, especially ones that could be up for awards. I feel very blessed.”

In “The Social Network,” Jow plays Alice in a brief appearance that finds her forming a uniquely college relationship with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. “They sort of hook up,” she admits of her character and Jesse Eisenberg’s character. “I mean, the whole movie is these people in college because that’s where the whole Facebook thing happens.”

She auditioned for a larger role that went to actress Brenda Song. But Jow – who has an exotic look, being half-Chinese and part Cherokee – had a couple of champions in her corner who decided that Song’s character needed a best friend and that Jow should play her.

“Aaron Sorkin, the writer, he loved me, and the casting director loved me, and I was worked into the script,” she said. “So it’s a smaller role, but it’s in a film that has so much clout behind it. (The buzz) is unreal, and the script is amazing, and I can’t wait for people to see the movie.”

Next up for Jow is a reunion of sorts with Nickelodeon. Fans can watch her in the new season of “The Troop,” a comedy-adventure about monster-capturing teens, which is shooting its second season in Vancouver, Canada.

“I’m a new character that brings some edge to the show, kind of a bad girl. I show up on a motorbike and the rest is history,” Jow says, laughing. “She’s full of secrets and she shakes things up for the main characters in the show.

“It’s such a change in tone from ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and ‘The Social Network’ because this is so colorful, and it’s a kid’s set, and all of us are the same age. It’s so much fun and so light-hearted.”

Jow is planning a fall visit to Tulsa, where most of her extended family still lives. While she lives in California with her mother, two brothers and a sister, both sets of Jow’s grandparents live here, as do many aunts, uncles and cousins. One set of grandparents operates Golden Palace, so Chinese food is always on the menu for any trip back home.
