oktober 10, 2010   Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Candice Accola interview met Popwrap   Candice King, Interviews

Not since Francie’s evolution to The Francinator during the second season of “Alias” has an actor been asked to take their character on such a 180 degree journey. Thankfully for “Vampire Diaries” fans, making Caroline Forbes a vampire hasn’t also turned her into a horrible she-beast that must be destroyed.

It has instead taken a supporting character of medium interest and sent her skyrocketing in importance, involvement and intrigue. A development actress Candice Accola has welcomed with equal amounts of appreciation and fear.

I rang up the actress following an ovation worthy couple of episodes to talk about tackling the undead obstacle head on, why she’s able to closely identify with her character’s dilemma and what the future holds for Caroline … and Candice.

PopWrap: First off, you have been killing it this season.
Candice Accola: Oh thank you so much. It’s always been exciting to wake up and go to work. In this business it’s also just exciting to have a job [laughs] and one that you enjoy. But to be presented with new challenges one season in is just a joy – there is not enough thanks or praise I can give to the writers for this wonderful opportunity!

PW: Did any part of you think, “this will be fun, but all the humans who become vampires tend to die?”
Candice: Well, not necessarily because of the transformation – the first day we started production in Atlanta, they called us into the conference room for a big congratulations on the pick up. And then right after that, the first thing we were told, “guess what – you’re on a vampire show, you can die at any time.” [laughs]. The room went pretty quiet after that.

PW: But you’re all cool with it now?
Candice: It’s understood at this point. I’m a huge “Dexter” fan and that’s kind of what the premise it – people will die. Who wants everyone to live happily every after, that would be boring! Luckily I’m still here in Atlanta, but there have been no promises, so I am just going to enjoy playing this character while I can.

PW: What has been the biggest challenge of playing Vampire Caroline?
Candice: I feel like Caroline and Candace are both learning and growing in synch together. I’ve never done stunts before or been asked to find such intense emotional levels because I’ve never played a character that has such an animalistic nature.

PW: How have you been handling that?
Candice: I’m figuring it out as I go. Just trying to work hard while following my own instincts and humanizing the experience as much as I can. For example, I just moved to Atlanta – new city, new job and I’m 23 so a lot of experiences in my life are new. I’m going through my own personal transformation right now too. Obviously that doesn’t result in me going out and killing people [laughs] but it does make me feel vulnerable and confused. So when those opportunities come up in the script, I try to humanize them as much as I can.

PW: One of Caroline’s biggest sacrifices was dumping Matt — will she be able to stay away from him?
Candice: In real life, especially when you’re young, you find yourself wanting to be in a relationship but not being fully able to give yourself to that yet. And I think that’s what Caroline is facing – emotionally she wants him, to be loved. But in her heart she’s realizing that she has to work on herself first. I’m excited to see if she gives in or holds back just like the audience is.

PW: And how about her relationship with Katherine — last week we saw their tagteam manipulation of Elena, will that continue even though Caroline was found out?
Candice: Katherine teased it perfectly by passing along the message “Game On” – that’s the best tease that could be given right now. Katherine is in Mystic Falls to stay, to play and all the madness that ensues stems from that.

PW: Have you learned anything about playing a new character watching Nina Dobrev play Katherine & Elena?
Candice: First of all, there’s not enough praise to be said about how hard Nina has been working and how beautifully she’s been delivering these two characters. You can tell, even in a scene with her, when it’s a Katherine day or an Elena day. There’s a shift in the way she walks, the way she carries herself and in her mannerisms – Nina is a little more sassy on Katherine days, which is exciting!

PW: Julie Plec described Katherine as “Nina on a Saturday night” …
Candice: [laughs] Oh that’s good.

PW: Do you have a similar equation for vampire Caroline to Candice Accola?
Candice: Not really. I see Caroline as being more sure of who she is and what she wants now – that’s what brings about such a reckless side of her. She’s no longer concerned with what everyone else wants. Becoming a vampire, while it hasn’t been the most positive, it helped her find the core of who she is.

PW: Which is?
Candice: She’s no longer held back by the things or people around her. Which can be bad because if you only do what you want with no concern for other peoples feelings – or safety – bad things can happen. But at the same time, if you’re controlled by everyone else’s feelings, that’s also really bad as well. Vampire Caroline is defining herself. It’s an extreme version of herself. It gets really crazy from here on out.

PW: Is there anything else you want to tease about the upcoming episodes.
Candice: No! I don’t want to spoil anything – I don’t want them to kill me off [laughs]
