The idea of the ‘damsel in distress’ has long figured into myth and literature. An ancient Greek legend presents the princess Andromeda chained to a rock, eventually saved from a sea monster by Perseus. The idea became popularized in medieval romances, and the aforementioned phrase emerged for the first time in English in the late 17th and early 18th centuries: in the 1692 poem, ‘‘Sylvia’s Complaint of Her Sexes Unhappiness,’’ in a mid-18th-century ballad, ‘‘The Spanish Lady,’’ in the 1755 translation of Don Quixote, and the 1919 P.G. Wodehouse’s novel A Damsel in Distress, which went on to become a musical.

The ultimate culmination of damsels in distress? The Disney princesses, with the Prince Charmings, the happy endings, and the forever afters. Today, of course, the damsel in distress can fight her own dragons and pay her own rent— even the Disney princesses have started speaking up—but the idea that a woman needs a man to feel complete still lingers like a dark cloud above these figures’ heads.

Actor and producer Nina Dobrev’s newest role in Love Hard subtly, through comedic relief, explores the unresolved idea of wanting the perfect love. It reaches the timeless conclusion that, although wanting love is valid and necessary, the first place one should look for it is within oneself. Love Hard is a feel-good, romantic, holiday-seasoned comedy, additionally featuring Jimmy O. Yang, Darren Barnet, and Heather McMahan. “It’s a fun ride,” comments Dobrev of the film, “and everyone in the film is really hilarious, but it’s not just all jokes. There’s a lot of heart in the film, a lot of connection, and the themes are really interesting.”

Fresh Vine Wine — the health-conscious brand from best friends and business partners Nina Dobrev and Julianne Hough — has entered into a multiyear partnership as the wine partner of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Under the deal, Fresh Vine Wine will be served at select bars at the NFL team’s new home, SoFi Stadium. On the menu will be the label’s California cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, chardonnay and recently released rosé.

To celebrate the arrangement, Dobrev and Hough turned up at the Chargers’ first home game on Aug. 22. The deal marks the fourth sports partnership for Fresh Vine after similar pacts with the National Hockey League, National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball.

Dobrev, a “longtime football fan,” said Fresh Vine will bring a premium luxury wine experience to fans “who love indulging in the greatest things that life has to offer while being conscious consumers with active lifestyle choices.” She added: “As the world reopens, we hope that Fresh Vine Wine and SoFi stadium can bring people together safely through laughter, connection and shared experiences while satisfying their taste buds.”

Hough suggested the brand’s “premium low-carb, low-calorie, gluten-free and vegan-friendly wines” will be a good match for Chargers fans and sports enthusiasts. “The synergy across our brand, Fresh Vine Wine and SoFi Stadium is unmatched, and we cannot wait to share with fans the enjoyable, guilt-free experience that Fresh Vine Wine is.”

Chargers president of business operations A.G. Spanos said his organization is thrilled to partner with Fresh Vine Wine. “We couldn’t be happier that Julianne and Nina were able to join us last Sunday as we kicked off the partnership while also welcoming fans to a Chargers game at SoFi Stadium for the first time. Being able to offer their premium collection of wines to our fans further enhances what is truly an extraordinary gameday experience.”

Earlier this summer, the pair opened up on their journey from friends to business partners, telling The Hollywood Reporter that it’s been a seamless and fruitful collaboration. “At the end of the day, life is about sharing things with people you love, laughing and enjoying every single moment, the highs and the lows,” Dobrev said in May. “It’s been such a high with Julianne.”

Nina Dobrev has been working in Hollywood since the 2000s, when she began starring in hits like Degrassi, The Vampire Diaries, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. But her four-bedroom L.A. home is not your typical West Hollywood pad. Dobrev, who is Bulgarian and spent some of her childhood in the south of France, leaned into her heritage when conceiving the interiors. While an airy sense of California cool is evident in sleek brass details and locally-sourced art and furniture, her careful preservation of the residence’s late-1920s Spanish-style architecture provides a sense of European elegance.

Like many who have plunged into a remodeling frenzy throughout the last year, the pandemic was what pushed Dobrev to do a revamp. “I used to say that I lived most of my life on planes, because I’m constantly traveling for work and pleasure,” Nina Dobrev says to AD. “But the pandemic was the first time that I was in my home for an extended period of time,” she says, explaining that the very first thing she did was paint the entire exterior of the house herself.

“Maybe it’s the frugal side of me, the Eastern European Bulgarian girl that was like, I don’t want to pay a lot of money to have a bunch of people come and paint this, and I’m bored,” she says with a laugh. Whatever it was, she went to The Home Depot for a pressure washer and some paint, and proceeded to coat the home’s mustard-yellow exterior a fresh matte white.

This isn’t to say that Dobrev is a minimalist when it comes to color: “Oh no, Nina wasn’t scared of color,” says Charlie Barstein, who—under his eponymous firm, Charlie Barstein Interiors—worked with Dobrev during the pandemic to remodel her abode. His biggest challenge, and the home’s focal point, was Dobrev’s kitchen. With olive green cabinets and textured terra-cotta floors, it’s reminiscent of a beautifully decorated country cooking area that’s truly meant to be used. European influences can be seen elsewhere as well, from the vintage terra-cotta tiles imported from Italy to the retro-looking Ilve range (also Italian). Barstein even added a butler’s pantry, which he decorated with an artwork by Joe Henry Baker.

Mounted surfboards serve as decoration for Dobrev’s gym, which opens up to her yard via French doors. Outside, there’s plenty of seating.
The most substantial change was the removal of a wall that had been a part of the building’s original 1929 architecture. Blocking off the dining room, it effectively created a cramped galley kitchen that Dobrev rarely used. That wasn’t too bad back when she was bouncing across the country to different sets, but, as Dobrev puts it, “my old kitchen was my 20s kitchen, and now this is my adult, 30s kitchen.”

Dobrev’s “adult” kitchen began with making the space more functional. First, she replaced the countertops, adding a butcher’s block for cooking and Dolomite slabs for durability. “I want to have kids in my home, and I have dogs, and I have friends over. . . I didn’t want to be paranoid and wipe down every counter every second,” Dobrev reflects.

“She’s not living in an era of just Postmates anymore,” Barstein adds. “She wants to cook and host, and I wanted to provide her with a space to do that in.” A crucial piece of equipping Dobrev for hosting duties meant updating her dining table. Barstein sourced the new one, a stunning piece made of camel-colored oak, on Instagram, after stumbling across local artisan Josh Jackson of Arbor Exchange.

The rest of the home got more of what Dobrev describes as a “facelift,” as opposed to a full renovation. Some tweaks included an expanded breakfast nook with fluffier pillows, and the inclusion of more thoughtful color choices in the living room. That latter space also features an enlarged wildlife photo taken on a safari (the room’s centerpiece), and a Bowie print gifted to her by her boyfriend, snowboarder Shaun White. While these artworks may make for lively pops, Dobrev’s spice rack, which she describes as “very adult Nina,” is her favorite aspect of her home. “It’s the best part of the whole house—it makes me feel like an adult, officially grown.”
