The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley has signed on for prequel miniseries Flowers in the Attic: The Origin.

The actor, who is best known for playing bloodsucker Stefan Salvatore on the long-running supernatural show, is set to share the screen with The White Queen’s Max Irons and Star Trek: Voyager’s Kate Mulgrew in the star-studded drama, which takes place before the events of V. C. Andrews’ gothic novel.

Based on Andrew Neiderman’s literary follow-up Garden of Shadows, the four-episode outing follows Olivia Winfield (Gold Digger’s Jemima Rooper), a headstrong young woman who finds herself falling for one of the nation’s most eligible bachelors Malcolm Foxworth (Irons).

Their romance takes an unexpected turn, though, when she becomes the mistress of Malcolm’s formidable estate, and discovers dark secrets linked to her new partner’s past.

In a desperate attempt to keep those around her safe, Olivia is forced to become the wickedest version of herself, which eventually paves way for her inevitable, notorious decision to lock her grandchildren in the loft.

Wesley will play Olivia’s cousin John Atmos, while additional cast members include Harry Hamlin (Mad Men), Alana Boden (Alex Rider), Hannah Dodd (Harlots), T’Shan Williams (The Color Purple), Callum Kerry (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Frasier’s Kelsey Grammer. The latter plays Malcolm’s respected father Garland Foxworth.

Greenlit by Lifetime, Flowers in the Attic: The Origin has been adapted to screen by Paul Sciarrotta (Jane the Virgin), Jennie Snyder Urman and Joanna Klein. All three will act as executive producers on the project.

Robin Hood’s Declan O’Dwyer has been lined up to direct the first two chapters, with Robin Sheppard (Benidorm) helming parts three and four.
